Whenever I come home I am greeted by my cat. It’s probably better to say that my cat goes through a greeting ritual that he has made up all by himself. I honestly believe that he might be the only cat in the world that does this.
So I arrive home, I begin to slot my key into the lock and that’s his cue. It’s as if alarm bells were ringing inside his head because as soon as he hears the key hit the lock he begins to run down the stairs screaming, “Daddy’s home!” in cat speak… Obviously I like to think that he’s shouting that rather than some abuse like, “Where the f$&! have you been?!”
As soon as the door opens, the cat speak chant continues, “Daddy’s back, you’re the best, Daddy’s back yeeeeahh”. I usually take this opportunity to sing back to him “who’s the best guy in the world? Lilo! Whilst, doing a little victory dance…what?... there's nothing wrong with that; you have to make the most of your cat chanting you.
He then continues to circle around my legs waiting for the big moment, that both me and Lilo know is soon to come. You can anticipate his excitement, his euphoria growing, as we get closer and closer to the big moment, it’s almost like waiting for the drop on a rollercoaster.
Then as soon as I take my shoes off, the drop happens. He drops his face right inside my shoe! He goes hard at it, as if he was a hard addict sniffing glue. His claws grips the sides of the shoe so that the inanimate (sinky) object has no where to run and starts taking big whiffs. The smellier the shoe the better – he loves it when I come back from the gym.
When he is reaching the climax of the greeting ritual, his face remaining firmly inside the stinky shoe he begins to bunny kick the shoe in a wild frenzy. Then as is comes to a close, he pops his head out the shoe and it is easy to tell that he is filled with content.
As if nothing has happened, he leaves the shoe where I left it, probably leaving the shoe feeling vulnerable.
I thought I’d tell you this story to show how funny and peculiar each cat is. I am certain that your cat has their own quirks that makes them even more lovable.
Here is the moment you've been waiting for - Lilo in action!
